Toys for two
Adding an object to partnered sex changes the social situation more than the physical one. The shapes that work are the ones that leave room for two bodies, and the introduction matters more than the item.
Most of what goes wrong when a toy enters partnered sex has nothing to do with the toy. A device is faster, stronger and more relentless than any hand, which is exactly its value, and it also silently removes a job from one of the people present. If that removal is not named, it gets interpreted, and the interpretation is rarely generous.
The introduction
Say what it is for, before rather than during. A toy introduced as an answer to a specific and pleasant fact, that a body responds well to steady vibration and no hand can maintain steady vibration for fifteen minutes, is a different proposition from a toy that appears mid session without comment.
Let the person whose body it is aimed at hold it first, at least the first few times. Direct control removes the guesswork about pressure and position, which is where most first attempts fail. Control can be handed over later, and by then there is a shared reference for what the right pressure feels like.
It is also worth saying plainly that a device is not a substitute for a person. It does one thing very well and nothing else at all: it cannot change position, adjust pressure by feel or respond to anything. Hands and mouths remain the versatile instruments.
Shapes that tolerate a second body
This is the practical filter. Many toys are designed for a single user with unobstructed access, and in a two person configuration they simply get in the way.
- Small flat external vibrators. The most useful category by a wide margin. Slim enough to sit between two bodies during penetrative sex, and easy to hold in place by either person.
- Rings. Worn at the base of the penis or over a dildo, usually with a small motor sitting against the front. Simple, effective, and they keep both hands free. The ring should stretch easily and never be worn to the point of numbness or colour change.
- Wands. Excellent for partnered use because the handle keeps a hand out of the way and either person can hold it. Full detail in the wand guide.
- Remote controlled devices. Useful mainly for the shift in who is in control, which is the actual appeal. Check the range and whether control is by physical remote or by an application, since an application involves an account and a connection that a physical remote does not.
- Wearable internal devices. Designed to stay in place during penetration. Fit varies enormously between bodies, so this is the category most likely to be bought once and abandoned.
Shapes that generally do not work with a second body: large rabbits with rigid external arms, anything requiring a fixed angle to remain effective, and suction devices, which need an uninterrupted seal and a hand to hold them steady.
Hygiene when a toy moves between people
Three rules cover almost everything. A toy that moves from one person to another should be washed or have its condom changed first. A toy that moves from anal to vaginal use must be washed or re-covered without exception, since bacteria transferred that way is a genuine and common cause of infection. And porous toys, meaning TPE, TPR, PVC and jelly, should not be shared at all without a condom, because they cannot be sterilised. That reasoning is in body safe materials.
Condoms over toys are practical rather than paranoid: they cut cleaning time, allow quick swapping between people, and let a porous item be used more safely.
Timing
The most common mistake is introducing the device too early. A body that has not yet engorged finds strong stimulation sharp rather than pleasant, and the toy takes the blame for what was actually a timing error. Ten minutes of ordinary contact first changes the verdict completely.
The second most common mistake is leaving it on one setting for the entire session. Arousal changes what a body wants, and a level that was ideal at the start is frequently too little later and too much at the very end.
Choosing together
Two people choosing an item together tend to do better than one person surprising the other, and not only for the obvious reason: the conversation surfaces preferences that would not otherwise be stated. Ranges organised by how a device is used in company rather than by novelty, such as the couples selection at inWonderstate, make that conversation more concrete.
The wider ground is covered in the together region, and the vocabulary problem behind most of it in talking about desire.
