Sensation finder

Start with the sensation, not the object. This table takes a described feeling, names the category that produces it, and states the physical reason for the match, so that a preference can be turned into a decision.

Most shopping in this category runs backwards: an object is chosen first, and the sensation is discovered afterwards. Working the other way round removes most of the guesswork. The descriptions in the left column are the ones people actually use when asked what they want more of, and each row explains why the suggested category delivers it.

A described sensation, the category that produces it, and the reason for the match.
If the sensation wanted isLook atWhy it works
Deep, heavy, felt under the surfaceWand or large motor external toyLow frequency and high amplitude carry into tissue rather than staying on the skin, reaching the internal parts of the clitoris
Sharp and pinpointBullet or small tipped external toySmall contact area concentrates a high frequency output onto a few square millimetres
Intense but without anything touchingSuction devicePressure waves act on the enclosed glans through air, so there is no friction against the most sensitive tissue
Broad and spread across the whole vulvaFlat pad or wide head external toyA large contact patch distributes output over the labia and hood rather than one point
Firm internal pressure, slow to buildCurved rigid toy in glass, steel or cored siliconeA rigid shaft transmits pressure to the front wall instead of absorbing it by bending
Fullness without movementWeighted plug or solid dildoSteady stretch and mass provide constant proprioceptive input rather than changing stimulation
Rhythmic tapping or knocking insideThrusting or tapping internal deviceRepeated impulses at the tip resemble the beckoning motion of fingers, which suits pressure sensitive tissue
Hot or cold as part of the sensationBorosilicate glass or stainless steelBoth materials hold temperature well and are entirely non porous, so they can be warmed or cooled safely
Hands free during penetrative sexRing with a small motor, or a slim flat external toySlim profiles stay in contact between two bodies without needing a hand to hold them
Both internal and external at onceDual arm toy, or two separate devicesSeparate devices allow each element to be positioned independently, which fits far more bodies than a fixed arm
Something someone else controlsRemote controlled wearableThe appeal is the transfer of control rather than the sensation itself, so range and responsiveness matter more than power
Very light, almost teasingToy with a genuinely low first setting, or a soft brush surfaceThe floor of the intensity range matters more than the ceiling for this preference
Stretch at the entranceTapered plug or graduated setDiameter rather than length produces the sensation, and a taper allows the muscle to release in stages
Nothing electrical at allSolid glass, steel or silicone with no motorWeight, temperature and shape provide the whole sensation, and there is nothing to charge or fail

How to use the table well

Read across from the sensation, then check the reason before checking the object. If the reason does not describe what you are after, the row is the wrong one however appealing the category sounds.

Two categories are worth treating cautiously as first purchases. Suction devices divide people sharply, for the reasons in the suction guide, and dual arm toys depend on a fixed distance between two contact points that suits some anatomies and not others. Both are excellent second purchases and risky first ones.

If the sensation is not known yet

That is the normal situation, and the answer is measurement rather than shopping. The method in body mapping is designed to produce exactly the vocabulary this table needs: firm or light, broad or pinpoint, steady or changing, internal or external. Three or four sessions produce a clearer answer than any amount of browsing.

Where a general starting point is wanted, a rumbly external toy with a low first setting suits more people than anything else, which is the argument in a first vibrator.

Before buying anything from this table

Check the material against the material table, since a perfect sensation in a porous material is a poor purchase. Check the lubricant against the compatibility table, particularly if the item is silicone. And read the note on why the first toy is often wrong, which covers the part of the decision that has nothing to do with specifications.
